The University of Groningen
The University of Groningen (UG) is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands. Founded in 1614, UG is renowned for its excellence in education and research.
As an international university with deep roots in the northern Netherlands, the UG boasts a broad academic profile spanning the social sciences, humanities, medical sciences, and science and engineering. Through its Institutional Plan 2026–2031, UG is taking the first steps toward its vision 2040: becoming a fifth-generation university that collaborates even more closely with society, shares knowledge widely, and actively applies education and research to address societal challenges.
For years, UG has consistently ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in prestigious rankings such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the THE World University Rankings. This recognition stems from its outstanding research, global reputation, and strong partnerships with businesses, governments, and other universities. As a result, UG attracts students and researchers from all corners of the globe.
The City of Groningen
Groningen is the largest city in the northern Netherlands, home to approximately 206,000 residents (with the municipality of Groningen hosting around 244,000). Locals proudly call themselves Stadjers. As a true university city, Groningen welcomes over 60,000 students who live and study here, giving the city a vibrant, youthful energy. The average age is just 36, significantly younger than the Dutch national average of 41.
Both the city and the province of Groningen are renowned for their friendly and open-minded character. Whatever your interests, Groningen has something for you. With its historic city centre, thriving student community, modern vibrancy, and prestigious university, Groningen offers a cosy yet international atmosphere. Many Stadjers and students get around by bike, as the compact city centre makes almost everything accessible within minutes. Safe, dynamic, and full of opportunities, Groningen is an ideal place to study, work, and unwind. There’s always something exciting to do or explore.
